Meat Mecca: Lockhart, Texas

We have a thing now in which each year we’re making a Texas circuit.  Last year, it was Houston to San Antonio to Lockhart to Austin to Dallas.  Soon, I want to get the boys up to the Panhandle where I lived for 4th and half of 5th grade — in Dumas and Sunray.  Beside the one we have at our home as the ‘chandelier’ in the stairway of our home (that Av ‘caught’ the last time we were there), they have never seen a tumbleweed…or prairie dog.

I have this…I don’t know…need… to get the boys to Texas and have them live and love it.  The loving is the easy part: it’s just so easy to fall in love with Texas.  And it’s crazy-easy to get Av to love Texas, if for nothing other than barbecue.  Where does great barbecue live?  It lives all over the South really, but the epicenter, the mecca, the trinity is in Lockhart, Texas: Smitty’s, Black’s, Kreuz.

So Lockhart.  First, Smitty’s Market.

Hot ring, fat brisket.  No forks, just fingers.  And go.

Then, there’s Black’s Barbecue:

He’s measuring what you want on that scale.

Sausage ring, brisket:

Giant beef rib.  Thinking: wow, that’s quite a bone…

Yes. Because I put a magazine next to it to show that it’s…what…9 or 10 inches.  That’s a bone.  Av sees that rib and looks like this.

And finally, on the way out of town, Kreuz Market.

sausage, and turkey

and German potato salad.

Av = very happy.
