English-Themed: Gordon Ramsay Steak and Beatles: LOVE

This was true birthday love! Leslie and I made reservations for Gordon Ramsay Steak at the Paris the first night we were in Vegas…and she treated me as part of my birthday celebration! How sweet is that!?!

We knew we wanted to do one big steakhouse during our stay in Las Vegas. Among the ones we considered were Tom Collichio’s Craft Steak, Mario Batali’s Carnevino, SW Steakhouse…but the one we settled on was Gordon Ramsay Steak
It was the right decision.
Oooh before I forget: I’m wearing my favorite RL dress and my tall strappy Frye sandals thinking that everyone there will be dressed to some probably unwritten but understood code, but everywhere we went, with maybe the exception of Nobu, there were people dining in shorts and tees. We didn’t let it dial down what we planned to wear for the rest of the trip, but we could have been completely slouchy and no one would have thought anything. Still, we were two girls living it up, so we tried to keep things really cute!
Here we go!

Our banquette was upstairs, and this was our view of the ceiling installation. The neon tubes are a representation of Gordon Ramsay’s hand movements as he makes a beef wellington.

An iPad listed the signature cocktails (the HK Antioxident, with Veev Acai Liquer, lemon, and blueberries was smooth and fresh), and almost everything else was listed in the hardbound menu.

While considering the menu, our head waiter brought over the selection of meats (it may be hard to decipher exactly how this is set up, but atop each placement is a mirror so that one may view the marbling of each cut from above as well). The funny part is that as he got done making his presentation, he asked us if we wanted to take a picture. When I asked him about it, he said, “everybody wants to take a picture of this!”.

He especially tried to interest us in the tasting menu, but as both of us would have to order it and Leslie didn’t care for a couple of the dishes, we passed. One thing that I found a bit cheesy but, well, cheesy in a sweet way, was that those ordering the tasting menu got to keep the signed photograph of the chef:

That’s Leslie on the left, and me on the right…and heh, realizing just now I wore those sunglasses the whole time we were at the restaurant.

Chef Ramsay, we’re not going to take your picture home with us, but we did want to include you.

We knew we were having a big supper so we passed entirely on appetizers. You can imagine, though, this bread plate was devoured.

Leslie’s beef short ribs — red wine braised, with potato puree and wild mushrooms:

*Of course* I had to have the beef wellington. Not sure how big this comes across here, but it’s big. I had half. Know how people say they ate a steak that was ‘like butter’? This was like butter. It was the most tender piece of steak I have ever had. The mushrooms were delectable. And the pastry was soft on the inside and flaky on the outside. Perfect in every way. I want this for supper every night.

And it may seem odd, but we completely should have passed on ordering sides. With the vegetables and starches that came on our plates, there was no need for the macaroni and cheese (blue, cheddar, parmesan, truffle, english peas) or the ginger-glazed shiitakes (with scallions and crispy shallots).

But THIS. I read English magazines — delicious., BBC Good Food, and others, but I have never made or had a real sticky toffee pudding. And where better? Sweet pudding cake, brown sugar toffee, brown butter ice cream. It was so soft and so warm and so comforting. Just the perfect amount of sweet. Yes forever.

When Av and I go to Las Vegas, this is the first place we’re going. It will make him endlessly happy.

After our just completely amazing supper, Leslie and I headed over to the Mirage for the Cirque du Soleil show, Beatles LOVE. I have an appreciation for the Beatles and have been to a handful of Cirque shows, but this was a thousand times better than imagined. No pics are allowed inside the theatre, but this is the walkway in:

Our reserved seats were not great, but we ran into the nicest usher! As we went to the section our seats were to be in, the usher explained that they were closing that part of the theater and since he liked Leslie and me so much, he gave us ***front row seats***!  Wow!! We made friends with the nice family in seats next to us, the show was far beyond my (already pretty high) expectations, and the performance for ‘Here Comes the Sun’ was so pretty I thought I might cry. It was just crazy fun. A perfect, perfect, magical night!

Setting Up Las Vegas Wonderfulness

Happy New Year!
It’s Las Vegas week on DFK!

There are family vacations and there are date nights and there are girls days.

But of all these, Leslie and I — friends for over 15 years — have never gone off for a few days just the two of us (other than family vacations together, the furthest the two of us have gone afield is the time we took the day to visit Graceland Too, its own life-altering experience).

Leslie’s little one is two so she can, for the first time, get away a little bit now. So it was time: let’s make a grown-up girl trip. Aah-may-zinnng!

The last time I was in Las Vegas was over ten years ago, for a work conference. We stayed that time at Mandalay Bay and although I was open to whatever, it was the hotel we chose to stay for this trip. I think it was several hundred dollars less expensive that some of the more interesting hotels on the other end of the strip and I knew it was nice (plus with tram/walking/cabs/Uber, not a huge concern) so we were great with it.

Not all of the rooms have been renovated, but we were lucky enough to be given one at check-in:

We got here right at lunch and although had already made plans for almost all other meals, we wanted something quick, easy, and nearby for lunch. We saw that Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar was in the hotel and headed straight over. Okay, let’s see what Hubert Keller dreams up for hamburgers.

Leslie had the eponymous burger, which turned out to be under-seasoned buffalo on ciabatta. I had a lamb burger which wasn’t seasoned at all, along with a little sack of fries (though the fries on their own were perfect). Ah, a little disappointing.

But that’s okay — while this wasn’t much, we weren’t looking for much. And the trip turned out to include three of the great meals of my life (seriously.). One of those on tomorrow’s post.

Upcycling Trees And Thinking Mardi Gras

Two things to be thinking of right now:

If you celebrate Christmas and use a live tree, before putting it on the curb, if you’ve considered making your own bottle tree, you’re ready to go.

Ornaments are easy to find now for at least 50% off — look for regular unadorned round globes in two or three different sizes, in green, purple, and gold.  Here are the instructions — it’s easy to make and even though this one was made in 2008, it still looks perfect!

Thrillist’s Best Burger In America Is In Tupelo. And They’re Right.

We found a place we love in Tupelo. Neon Pig.

It even beat out ~30 other places, including Company Burger, Hog and Hominy, and in the finals, a place in San Francisco (though doesn’t it make you wonder how this turns out fairly since so many places are in high-density areas thus would seemingly have a larger voter pool, and how many people have had each?). Still, I imagine that the voters got it right.

Before we get too far, the Neon Pig is situated in a small space in just a regular, nothing-special shopping center. But that really has nothing to do with anything. This is what awaits inside.

Not just cowboy cut, but a Benton’s bacon-cured cowboy cut.

along with sage advice

Help yourself to a can or bottle of…and some fresh produce (and Sugaree’s) for home

The boys wanted grilled cheese, and I decided to have the salad: tomatoes, corn, Benton’s, arugula, pickled onions, dressed with a combination of ‘white gold’ and harisa. Terrific. Sweet, sour, savory with pops of corn, meatiness of tomato. Will order this every time.

This is a deconstructed Smash burger — the one they are well-known for. Av’s a purist, so he orders just meat and bread. But this pie plate shows the accessories — Benton’s, cheddar, quick pickles, pickled onion, hoisin, and comeback:

Loved the burger. It’s a combination of aged filet, sirloin, ribeye, new york, and Benton’s. The way it’s cooked has a real backyard grill quality in taste. Perfect. Av thinks it’s right up there with Chez FonFon in Birmingham.

Go early or go late, because the word is out on how great this place is, and the seating capacity is crazy-small.

The bracket that Neon Pig won for best burger: here on Thrillist.

Next time in Tupelo, we’re trying their sister restaurant, Kermit’s Outlaw Kitchen.

Longue Vue

It’s warm here. The boys wore shorts and tees to school last week and I’ve been in sandals. Still, though, it’s December and the leaves have fallen, so in principle it should be cool. But I’d rather think about spring, and this week I was thinking about earlier this year at Longue Vue in New Orleans.

Longue Vue, New Orleans LA//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js

It was the home of Edith and Edgar Stern — Edith’s father was Julius Rosenthal, president of Sears and huge philanthropist (if you’ve ever heard of Rosenwald Schools…). The philanthropy continued with the Sterns. and the Times-Pic even did an article which started with calling them the ‘first couple of New Orleans philanthropy.’

I’d love to show pics of the inside, but interior images are not permitted. What made an impression was that the furnishings’ form and material were so traditional that they still looked tasteful and attractive all these years later. One of the back rooms of the home is made into a small gallery (I remember an Agam). And the Sterns were into technology — it was the first home in the area with central air…and built-in scales in the bathrooms.

While the home tour is done with a host, the garden tour of eight acres is self-guided:

Last month, Longue Vue House and Gardens: The Architecture, Interiors, and Gardens of New Orleans’ Most Celebrated Estate was published. It includes home and garden plans, even with listings of what plants are utilized in each specific area. Got it. Beautiful.

The Storytellers

At the Pinnacle in downtown Jackson, Rod Moorhead‘s sculptures of Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, and William Faulkner

from HottyToddy.com:
“…it was about Richard Wright for me,” he said. “Native Son is a killer story, a real Greek tragedy. You have to do Faulkner and in Jackson you have to do Welty, but I was doing Richard Wright.”
