Primo’s Cafe in Flowood (Jackson) MS

Last week, Av worked in Jackson for a while, and we got to have lunch at Primo’s Cafe in Flowood. We’ve been here several times – and they’re always great. They have free wi-fi access now, too.

Primo

Italian Wedding Cake at Primo
We weren’t super-hungry, so we just snacked on dessert rather than ordering a sandwich or anything. I had the Italian Wedding Cake. It was really, really nice.

Caramel Cake, Primo
Av had the caramel cake, which he really liked too. I do have to say, though, that nobody makes better caramel icing — if you’re not making it yourself at home — than Caramel Factory in Boyle, Mississippi (they ship).

What I really wanted to get Av was one of their tshirts – one of them says something like “biscuits are like bagels, except they’re soft and they taste better”.

Ezell’s Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

Av and I just love to go to Ezell’s Fish Camp in Lavaca (AL). It is a *real* fish camp – right on the water – and the fields around it are growing cotton…..

Three Boars, Taxidermy, at Ezell's Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

There are a bunch of deer mounted in the entranceway, and inside the dining room are these three wild boar.

World Record Blue Catfish (mounting by Archie Phillips) at Ezell's Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

This is the world-record blue catfish. This was done by Archie Phillips, who is the taxidermist whose sign “Get the US out of the UN” (there’s a new one up now, but I don’t remember what it is) can be seen from I-20/59 in Birmingham.

Coleslaw with Lance Captain's Wafters at Ezell's Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

First they bring out Lance Captain’s Wafers (the best), a lemon, cocktail and tartar sauce, and their coleslaw – which is so delicious!

Fried Pickles at Ezell's Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

Av loves their fried pickles, even though we can’t even eat half of what they bring out. They are so yummy though!

Catfish Dinner at Ezell's Fish Camp, Lavaca AL

Here’s my dinner – catfish fillets. Yummy!

Ezell’s is open seven days a week, and it’s so much fun just to go and sit by the water. One time after a storm, there was a lot of tree branches in the water, and we got to watch what I think was an egret just floating all the way down the river on one of the logs. Nice!

Dia De Los Muertos Festival in Phoenix

If I *could*, I would make it so that my life consisted of traveling all the time, going from festival to festival. Art festivals, food festivals, holiday festivals. Any kind of festival. I would be there.

Phoenix has a festival called the ‘Dia De Los Muertos Festival’ (“Dia De Los Muertos” means “Day of the Dead”) from October 31 to November 2.

Okay, that sounds different.

This is from the festival website:

Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

“The pre-Hispanic people honored duality as being dynamic,” said Christina Gonzalez, senior lecturer on Hispanic issues at Arizona State University. “They didn’t separate death from pain, wealth from poverty like they did in Western cultures.”

Neat!

When Av and I visited Santa Fe in 2001, I fell *so* in love with the city. We stayed at the Hotel St. Francis which was about 1/2 the cost some of the very-established hotels in the central square (the plaza). Our room was a little small, but it was very nice. The only thing about staying at that particular hotel was that we missed having a kiva – a traditional fireplace – in our room. We stayed just slightly off the central square (the Plaza) where there are so many things to do and see. In particular, I remember that we had this wonderful supper one night at the Eldorado Hotel‘s restaurant, The Old House, which is a four- or five- star restaurant. Nice.

There are hundreds and hundreds of galleries in Santa Fe, in the plaza area, but also in areas that you drive to, up dirt roads….there was just one after another. Santa Fe is one of those places where you really, really wish you had an endless supply of money.

I noticed that so many of the galleries had these things I’d never seen before – they were like little shrine/spirit house/altar piece/memory boxes with little skeletons and things like that inside. They were inspired by / for Dia De Los Muertos! Okay, even though they had things inside that are traditionally thought of as ‘scary’ (by me, anyway), they were so beautiful! Many of the skeletons seemed to be….happy! They were dancing, or wearing formal attire! Really different, and really neat.

I’ve never been to Phoenix, and my birthday *is* coming up….hmmmm….

Jim Bird’s Hay Creations in Forkland AL

On Hwy 43 between Eutaw and Demopolis (AL)…just south of Forkland and really just before you get into Demopolis, are Jim Bird’s hay creations.

You know you’re getting **really** close when you see these three signs:

Acta

Non

Verba (Acta Non Verba means : “actions speak louder than words”)

Jim Bird has been working on the hay creatures and other neat folk sculptures since 1993, when he said he wanted to make something for bored drivers to look at:

Coon Dog Cemetery, near Cherokee AL

Coon Dog Cemetery, Near Cherokee AL

Av and I visited the Coon Dog Cemetery while we were in the Florence area a few days ago.

The cemetery began in 1937 when Key Underwood buried his dog Troop there. Some other men asked if they, too, could bury their coon dogs on the land, and this started the ‘Coon Dog Cemetery’. The cemetery website states that there are more than 185 coon dogs buried there now.

This is from their website:

When columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson interviewed Underwood in 1985, he told her that a woman from California wrote him wanting to know why he didn’t allow other kinds of dogs to be buried at the coon dog cemetery.

“You must not know much about coon hunters and their dogs, if you think we would contaminate this burial place with poodles and lap dogs,” he responded.

Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa

Since we had to be in Florence overnight, Av and I decided to visit the new Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa there.

The hotel has only been open since June; they get a lot of business from being one of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail hotels. When we were checking in, lots of other people were there with their golf bags.

This hotel is developed by the RSA (Retirement Systems of Alabama), who also oversees several other nice hotels in Alabama. A little more about the RSA’s involvement can be found here.

The Renaissance Tower there was built several years ago as the ‘tallest tourist attraction in Alabama’ (it’s 300′ tall), which gave a really good view of the city and the Tennessee River. There also used to be an aquarium feature inside the tower. I’m not sure if that’s going to be reopened.

Av asked during check-in if the restaurant, 360 Grill, was open yet, but it won’t be open until September 20th; the neat thing is that it is a revolving restaurant, like the one at Niagara Falls (and Atlanta, and other big cities). The person at the reception desk told Av that it will make a quicker revolution during lunch and a much slower revolution at night for supper. Neat!

The only thing I wasn’t wild about was that the doorman called us, and the other guests “guys”, like “how are you guys?”. Everything else about the service, from the check-in to the maid service, and room service, was great though.

A great sign was that when we got on the elevator, this gentleman, who was also a guest, asked if we had ever stayed there before. We told him that we hadn’t, and he said that we were in for a real treat – that he had already stayed at the hotel a few times this Summer and that it really was nice.

Hotel Room, Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa, Florence AL
The room was nice. The beds were a little more firm than Av and I like, but we really enjoyed our stay. The furniture that the television sat on featured fishing scenes, which was appropriate for the location. Inside it was a mini-refrigerator. There was also a desk with chair (although internet access was $10 extra/day), and another chair to lounge in beside the balcony door.

The bathroom had separate shower and tub. The bath amenities were the usual small Neutrogena soaps, shampoos, etc.

We did get to try the room service since our supper at Dale’s, which we love, was a flop (see here). When we got back to the hotel, I just wanted to get in my pj’s and watch the rest of the rest of the Alabama game with Av. We called room service, and I got the nachos (not so great) and Av had the hamburger (very good), and we shared a slice of the creme brulee cheesecake (pretty good). It wasn’t Dale’s, but then again we couldn’t have watched Alabama beat Southern Miss in our pj’s there either! hahaha!

I think that room service must have come either from their restaurant/bar called “Swampers” (remember the part in Sweet Home Alabama where they say, “and Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers”? The hotel named this place after the Swampers, who were a group of studio musicians that recorded backup for people that came to town like Elvis, Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, *tons* of people – Muscle Shoals was a huge music-recording town) or from the other restaurant on-site, the Bronzeback Cafe (‘bronzeback’ is another name for a smallmouth bass).
BTW, we didn’t get to try the spa yet, it isn’t going to open until September 20th.

We’ll definitely come back to this hotel the next time we are in town. It really was nice.
