The Knoxville Museum of Art — rightly (and intelligently) — has an emphasis on not just one or two galleries of regional art, but rather it seems the vast majority of the building is devoted to its place.
Between the regional student art exhibit, the Higher Ground exhibit of East Tennessee Art, the Currents exhibit of more contemporary art with some southern pieces, and the Richard Jolley installation (he grew up in nearby Oak Ridge), KMA is filling this niche beautifully.
