Finding Dried Foul, Gorgeous Packaging, And Spam Musubi In Atlanta

Maria-Louise Coil, Dogwood Festival, Atlanta GA

We’ve gone to the have-to places: Mary Mac’s, Fox Bros, Flying Biscuit, The Colonnade, The Varsity…  We’ve searched for Peter Chang, had boxtys on Peachtree, and the freshest pitas on Buford Highway.  From the summer of college I lived in Norcross, we’ve there are dozens of places from that experience that we’ve kept…among them, Your Dekalb Farmers Market, our ‘Jewish Kroger’, and Bagel Palace.

At this point, we just try whatever.  Earlier this year, we took the boys to Jerusalem Bakery and Deli in Marietta which was excellent, excellent:

The bakery looked wonderful, and they even came around with dessert for us just as a nice surprise:

A really good experience.  Especially for these pita-lovers:

This spring, we visited Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ on Briarcliff Road where the boys got a fried rice, Av had the grilled chicken with macaroni salad (which was recommended as very good, but it wasn’t terribly interesting. Also, looking at that plate, alongside the rice, it’s just two little mounds of carb + carb sitting there.).  He liked the chicken, but it wasn’t life-altering, either.

I’ve always heard about the Hawaiian penchant for Spam, so I got the Spam Musubi.  So, yeah, it’s a sushi roll with Spam and a sweet sauce inside.  Meh.

Some good news is that Top Chef Duels begins on Wednesday, and it’s heavy on Atlanta talent: Hugh Acheson is a judge; contestants include Art Smith, Kevin Gillespie (he lives in Serenbe (which seems perfectly lovely in that New Urbanism way), and Richard Blais.
