La Fonda

Everyone’s heard the maxim, “eat where the locals eat” — so it’s easy to figure that the best thing to do is to see which establishments have full parking lots.  As this part of northeast Alabama — Ft. Payne — has a much larger Hispanic population than ever before, and more than other parts of the state (DeKalb County here is at 13.6% while the rest of the state averages at 3.9%), there are more and more locals eating authentic Mexican food.  And how can you not like this retro setup right in the middle of town on Hwy 11, anyway?

We’ve eaten at other places in Ft. Payne, most recently before this trip at Ol’ Tymer’s BBQ and Blues but weren’t impressed, and the thought of eating wings or deli or Chinese food, or a chain especially, doesn’t really appeal here either.   We were really glad we came here:

Besides the tacos (I think one of these was asada and the other chorizo), they have sopes, tortas, and tingas — which I’ll try next time.

Delicious.
