There’s a sacred harp convention going on today and Saturday in Shelby County at the First Christian Church on Valleydale Road. Shug and I were headed that direction anyway today, so we stopped in for about five minutes to see (there’s nothing like this in Jewish music and I have to say it is the prettiest singing I have ever heard).
This is actually the 29th Annual National Sacred Harp Convention, and when we walked in we were asked to register – well, just me actually – and they were even going to give me a convention badge, but I explained that we were just going to stay for a minute to listen. It’s free and you can come and go as you please. If you’re familiar with shape note singing, you’re welcome to join in, and they even ask when you register if you’d like to lead a song.
The singing is going on today and Saturday from 9:30am to 2:30pm (there’s a story about it here).
