We were in B’ham today so we had lunch at Culinard – the food is prepared and served by students. It was good – Av had a buffalo hamburger and I had a sandwich using brioche. We wanted to bring some goodies back to his office, so we stopped right next door at the bakery and brought this back:
(I figured everybody likes cookies, plus Av got some sort of chocolate torte and I got a lemon square which was **amazing**.) Next time we should get everybody an assortment of their pastries, which I’m sure are just as good if not better!
Right down the street from there, I spotted this in the parking lot of the Regions Bank training center – it’s a replica of Vulcan, but it’s the version of the ‘old’ Vulcan, where he’s holding his popsicle:
When Vulcan was renovated and went back to the original spear (or whatever he holds now), his popsicle was removed (the popsicle/torch was put in his hand in the ’40s as part of a highway safety program – when there was a bad accident, it glowed red and when everything was fine it glowed green). When I was little and we drove to B’ham, it was *such* a big deal to see Vulcan and what color was glowing that night. Now that he has been renovated, I never even think about looking over to see him because his popsicle is gone! I know it sounds weird, but it was (obviously) something no other city had or did. Av took this picture of Vulcan before he was taken down for restoration:
