Shopping in Oxford and Tupelo

On our way back home, we went through Oxford (it was foggy!) – this is Neilson’s, which is the oldest store in the South:

…and this is Square Books, which is my favorite book store anywhere. We always get lots of things there, and one of the really great things about it is that they send out this fantastic email each week called “Speed Reader” that talks about new arrivals and who’s coming in to sign their book this week, and lit news – that sort of thing. On Thursdays during certain parts of the year, they have a show called “Thacker Mountain Radio” that’s done live from the bookstore, and is really, really good. It’s played again on Saturdays on MPR.

We had an early supper at Ajax Diner which is also on the Square:

Av got the catfish which he really enjoyed, and I had the vegetable plate – turnip greens, squash casserole, hashbrown casserole, sweet potato casserole, and jalapeno cornbread. They served so much I could only take a couple of bites of each thing but it was sooo good!

After some more shopping in Oxford, we went to Tupelo to shop there downtown. One of the places we stopped at was Tupelo Hardware:

…which is the place that Gladys bought Elvis his first guitar:

They still sell guitars there but we didn’t get one…we did get our dogs a new food dish, though…

The next time we go through Tupelo, I think it would be fun to go to Elvis’ birthplace there – and what I’m almost positive would be even more fun would be to go to Graceland Too in Holly Springs!
